The Sounds

When I worked at KFI Radio I spent some time creating promos and other audio imaging for the station. I didn’t do it for long, maybe 2 years, but it was fun. I present an assortment of promos and work I did for the station during that time. What’s pretty cool about this stuff is it was all done at my home. Studio availability at the station was minimal, so I recorded the voice over tracks at the station and brought the files home on Zip disks.

This was 1996 or 1997, well before many of the very cool audio editing tools available today. There was no Fruity Loops and Sound Forge was in its infancy. A lot of effects used in these promos that today would take minutes to create took much longer back then. My main tools were the current version of Sound Forge and a program called Software Audio Workshop +, a 16 track digital editor that was WAY ahead of its time.

The voice you hear on these promos is Mark Denis. Mark was not only the voice of KFI, but also the afternoon traffic guy. I worked with him for over 7 years and feel honored to have spent that time with him. Sadly he passed away suddenly in April of 2000. He was one of the nicest men I ever worked with.

Here’s a sampling of promos and what not from my days at KFI:

Show Bumpers

The last three years I worked at KFI I was the producer of the Phil Hendrie Show. Early on one of the regular, recurring characters Phil did was of Raj Fenin, a middle-eastern gentleman who’d take over an hour or two of Phil’s show and do his own talk show. The guy became so popular that we decided to make him
a custom show opener and rejoin bumper. “Get In With Raj Fenin” was fun. No idea if he’s still doing the character much anymore.
