Photo Trippy at the Electric Daisy Carnival

Posted by Jonah Weiland in General -

This past weekend I decided to go to the Electric Daisy Carnival in Crapville, USA, also known as San Bernadino. I went with one purpose in mind — to try out my trusty new lens for my Canon Digital Rebel. It’s a lens that’s perfect for low-light situations and since I got it I’ve used it maybe twice. I knew the Electric Daisy Carnival, with it’s big rave like light shows and what not, would be a good place to take some photos. This isn’t a review of the event itself (I was there for only 2.5 hours and completely sober the entire time), but more just a me showing off some of the fun pics I snapped while I was there. So, let’s get to it.

Here are two of my favorite DJs, Gabriel and Dresden, spinning. Love the lighting in this one and the odd frozen moment on Gabriel’s face.

On Fathers Day

Posted by Jonah Weiland in General -

So, today was the first Fathers Day following my Father’s death last December. I realized the day had the potential to be very depressing, so I decided I would not do the very thing that could make that worse – staying at home all day, vegging out on the couch. Today was a day I had to get out of the house.

Now, at first I was going to do things that my Father specifically enjoyed. I thought about it for a while, but of course all my most recent memories are of my father as a much older man and primarily what he enjoyed doing in his later years was work. Well, no way was I going to work today. I thought further and remembered he loved traveling, but short notice and funding got in the way of that. Then I remembered he really enjoyed going to museums. Well, there was the David Hockney Portraits exhibit happening at the LA County Museum of Art that I read about and since I was a fan of his photography work and knew very little about his painted work, I figured I should go and educate myself.

If you have any interest in modern art, it’s an exhibit that’s worth your going to. Hell, even if you’ve only ever seen Hockney’s Pearblossom Highway photo montage and enjoyed it, then you should probably check out this exhibit. It’s fascinating to see how his early portrait work informed his photography and, ultimately, how his photography ended up informing his more recent portrait work. It’s always fun seeing 40 years of work in one place from a single artist’s life and seeing the changes, experimentation and evolution of the artist.

His portraits seem to fall into three categories – the mostly sketch work type, watercolors and finally the oils. My favorites were the oil pieces, particularly “Mum” from 1989. The thumbnail here does not do it justice. The colors in the original are far brighter, particularly the blues. The painting itself – in large part due to the blue background it’s painted – evokes a surprisingly three-dimensional feel. Standing in front of it, as well as to the side, the image seems to have real depth and dimension. I thought it was just me, so I pointed it out to my friend and neighbor Dawn as well as another couple that was looking at it and they all saw what I saw. I’m glad, too, because I was really beginning to think the 15 tabs of acid I popped right before the exhibit were beginning to affect me in a very odd way.

The exhibit took only about two hours to go through, so it left me with extra time Sunday afternoon. While driving back to the house, I got to thinking about other things my Father liked doing. When I was a kid my father loved being outdoors. No, he wasn’t much of a hiker or athlete due to the fact his many bodily ailments prohibited such activity, but during the summer we usually spent the entirety of each weekend by the pool, with my father always sporting quite the tan for six months of the year. He loved the sun, of course as long as it didn’t make him too hot as he was not much a fan of the heat (I take after him in that regard). So, what could I do that was outdoors? I asked Dawn about Runyon Canyon, which she hikes somewhat regularly. I’ve had a number of people tell me that Runyon Canyon was a great place to go hiking in Los Angeles, but I’d never been there. We decided we’d give a hike a try after 4:00, when Los Angeles was a little cooler. No, my Dad wasn’t exactly a hiker, but as my Mom pointed out to me Sunday evening, he probably would have been had his body not said, “No!” My Dad was the kind of guy who would and did do anything, as long as there was even a remote chance of him being able to accomplish it.

Instead of entering Runyon Canyon at the bottom through Hollywood, we entered through the Mulholland Drive entrance at the top. We parked and made our way to the trails, where I was struck by the amazing views of the Hollywood basin, Downtown LA and Culver City. The smog was kinda thick today, so you couldn’t see all the way to the ocean, but apparently you can on a clear day. Really a very beautiful and a perfect place to hike. It was pretty crowded, but not so much that it was annoying. If you don’t like dogs, this is not your place as dogs are allowed on the hiking trails freely and man do they look like they’re having a good time.

Did I have a good time? Absolutely, but Runyon Canyon kicked my lazy fucking ass. No doubt, I’m out of shape and going on a 3.5 mile hike that includes a 700 foot incline helps prove that. Yes, it was difficult at times, but I really enjoyed it. The scenery was nice – both the nature and the many sweaty ladies hiking up and down the mountain – and the view of Los Angeles is something I’ll never tire of. Oh, and for you tourists out there, apparently Runyon Canyon is a good place to do some celebrity watching, although all I saw were a bunch of sweaty fucks running up and down the mountain.

Today could have been a depressing day, but it really wasn’t. My mind and body were stimulated constantly, which is something I know my Father would be in favor of.

Happy Father’s Day, Dad. I miss you.

Of Treos, Printers and AT&T Assbags

Posted by Jonah Weiland in General -

Man, I’ve been busy. Lots going on lately, but I won’t bore you with the majority of it. Couple of fun tech things, though.

I finally got my Treo 650! WOO! I got one through Sprint and am thus far very pleased with my purchase. A number of people warned me off Sprint saying, “Oh, their service sucks. Lots of dropped calls. Data service sucks. Blah blah blah I like to hear myself talk blah blah blah.” I opted to go with Sprint for two reasons – their calling plans and data plan pricing is the best in the business, plus they don’t require you to have a data plan if you don’t want one (both AT&T and Verizon require it and their rate plans are outrageously overpriced). So far I’ve not had a single dropped call and the service has been great – hell, I could even browse the Internet and download my e-mail on the Treo while underground at my data center the other night. Bad service? Not in my experience.

That same week I got the phone, my old Epson 740 inkjet printer died. After printing out a good 200 or so invoices, map directions and other bull crap for the last maybe 10 years, it said, “Fuck you, I’m done printing your Yahoo! Maps – get a Thomas Guide, will you? ” Time to buy a new printer and rush off to fifth level of hell, otherwise known as Fry’s Electronics.. I was trying to choose between two different models – an HP LaserJet and a Canon Laser Printer that was on sale. Both had similar features, but the Canon was a good $80 cheaper. So, I pulled out the Treo out, typed the model names into Google and read reviews of both printers in the store. The Canon got some very good marks for speed and print quality, so I went with it. The sale price was $169 on the printer, but I had $120 in left-over gift certificates from Christmas, making the price of this beast a paltry $49. Gotta love that, plus the Treo showed me just how useful it can be.

In other tech related subjects, earlier this week my DSL service, provided by those fucks at AT&T/SBC, went down for four hours in the middle of the day. Four Fucking Hours. For people like myself who make their living online, that was a nightmare. After it was finally fixed, I decided it would be a good time to argue with them about my DSL package. Currently I pay $64.95 a month for 1.5 Mbps down/384 Kbps up with five static IP address. I really don’t need the five static IP addresses anymore and I saw AT&T has a number of much better DSL offers with higher upload and download speeds for $15 a month cheaper. Long story short, I called them up, argued with two different sales people about getting a better package, and all they could say was “Well, those deals are for new customers only. We could extend one of those deals to you, say the $49.95 a month one, but you’d be required to get call-waiting and two additional calling features for your phone.” Getting those additional features – which I don’t need – would cost me an additional $10, effectively negating any savings. As I pointed out how retarded that is, all the brain damaged AT&T spokesperson could say was, “Sorry, I understand your frustrations, but I have no control over what marketing has to say.” Even when I said I would be canceling my service with them if I couldn’t get a better rate, they’d do nothing. Clearly, all phone companies have no interest in customer retention.

Today I called Adelphia and ordered cable modem service. The plan I got will give me 6 Mbps down, 768 Kbps up for a total of $59.95 a month. That’s download speeds four times as fast and upload speeds twice as fast as I had with AT&T, yet it’s $5 cheaper a month – and it’s not AT&T! Adios, AT&T, you bunch of lobotomized assbags.

OK, just had to get that rant off my chest. What’s going on with you?

Sign The Devil is at Work Today

Posted by Jonah Weiland in General -

My A/C stopped working today. It’s hot and muggy in Southern California. My office is in a loft, so it’s upstairs where the heat rises to. It’s hot and uncomfortable and not easy to get work done without the A/C blaring.

It’s June 6th, 2006. The 2000th birthday of El Diablo. He’s clearly having some fun with me today. Bastard.

It’s supposed to be fixed tomorrow morning, June 7th. I guess then we’ll figure out if the Big Red One plans only a single day of celebration, of if it’ll be turning into a weeklong festival called Burning Man.

Wait, he can’t use that name. It’s already in use. Take that, Satan!

Down with the Devil.
