Photo Tour of Los Angeles

Posted by Jonah Weiland in General

Late Saturday afternoon I decided to drive to Downtown Los Angeles to play with the camera some more. I’ve been wanting to go down and take some photos of the Walt Disney Concert Hall for a while, and the new Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels is a short walk from there, which I’ve not seen yet, so why not go be a tourist in my own city.

With the Canon Digital Rebel in tow, I took about 80 pictures. I’m still not entirely pleased with the photos, but I think this batch was my best yet with the new camera. There’s actually one photo I like quite a lot. So, here I go sharing them with you, knowing full well I’m just about to throw you into a state of total boredom. You’ll have to click the little thing to see all the pics.

Gotta have the signage.

The front entrance. The sign is off to the left.

A look down Grand Ave. towards Downtown with the WDCH on the right.

This is a side of the concert hall as you travel down Grand towards downtown.

Walking back towards Temple, this is the side of the building. I like this shot.

Back at the front of the building.

Once again at the back of the building.

The architecture inside is just as amazing as it is on the outside.

The entrance area of the concert hall.

A slightly different angle with a bit different lighting.

This is my favorite photo of the bunch. There’s a small cafe to the left of this area. I like the lady working on her laptop. In the far back the lady is wearing a formal gown.

The bell tower at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels

From this angle the Cathedral looks like an elaborate tree house.

Letters for lost souls.

The Altar of Lost Souls. I think.

Even with a wedding going on, it didn’t help spruce up the rather drab looking Cathedral.

More of the inside.

There is this beautiful altar inside at the far end of the Cathedral.

Another angle.

At the far end of the hall is a baptismal. Here, a couple look up at a painting of some sort on the wall.

The first of three angles of the painting.

Number two.

Number three.

The pipe organ is the centerpiece of this Cathedral, but really doesn’t inspire like it should.

Some of the artwork on the front entrance.

Overall I was quite impressed with the Walt Disney Concert Hall, while I was disappointed as expected by the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. I’ve seen Cathedrals all over the world in Florence, Venice, Rome, London and Washington D.C. and the new LA one just doesn’t measure up. It’s very cold and I think in 20 years people will simply remark, “Wow, what an ode to 1990s style. Blech!” Oh well.

Hope you all enjoyed my little photo tour of LA. More soon, I hope.

Nice shots Jonah. I also shot the Disney Center via my photoblog. I’m Jackie’s friend btw. How do you like your Rebel? Shooting RAW yet? I’m in love with my Canon 20d and take it everywhere I go.

    Cheers!
