Natural Medicine

Posted by Jonah Weiland in General

So, they say that cranberry juice helps prevent certain types of kidney stones and bladder infections. Is the same true when you add a healthy dollop of vodka to the drink?

Probably not, but it’s not a bad cocktail to imbibe.

Nice interview with Terry O’Quinn from “Lost” today by the AP. He plays the character of “Locke,” easily the best character on the show.

Snow Beauty

When I was in Montreal a few weeks back I was put up at the Le Saint-Sulpice hotel in the heart of the downtown area. It’s an elegant hotel with big, beautiful rooms and phenomenal service. One of those hotels with $125 (Canadian) robes you can buy on a whim as you leave.

At any rate, it was a great stay and the snow storm the night I flew in afforded me a chance to take some beautiful no-flash photos of mostly unspoiled city streets. These pictures were taken with me hanging out the window of my third story hotel room. In fact, the ones taken at night I was wearing only a t-shirt and boxers. The moment I opened that window and the cold started coming in, well, let’s just say it was as thought I had a sex change and the turtle scurried away forever.

Man am I glad comments are off. That last sentence is wide open for Bag Fest 2005.

Well, here’s some night and then early morning photos of the same street, plus a night time shot of their outside ice bar (not in use due to the snow-a-plenty).

Surprises

Posted by Jonah Weiland in General

Yesterday afternoon I went to visit my Father in the care center. Seeing as how I haven’t updated people for a while on his condition, I guess I should. He’s very skinny, but is alert. He’s confused most of the time you talk with him. He talks about events totally out of sequence and mixes things up regularly. He gets confused easily, often times thinking he’s at home or has only been at the care center for a few days. But he’s mostly happy and that’s the most important thing.

So, yesterday I went to visit him and as I approached him he looked, well, different. Like, a little bit better. Maybe a little younger. It took me a while to put my finger on it and then, “Oh my God!”

“What?” my father replied.

See, my father’s profession was Psychiatry. He was a Psychiatrist in every way. A great one. He even looked quite a bit like Freud with the Freudian gotee. He fit the part.

So, the other day, someone shaved off the beard portion of his gotee and left only his mustache. In 33 years of living I’ve never, ever seen my Father’s chin. I actually had to stare at him for a good five or ten minutes just to get my bearings! It was really quite a shock. Not in a bad way, though, just shocking. He’s an 83 year old man and probably looked 5 or 7 years younger without it. He resembled a better looking 40-year-old Dennis Franz, but keep in mind that Dad is 83.

Anyone who knows me well knows that I tend to change my facial hair frequently. Sometimes I’ll have your standard gotee, other times I may just have the soul patch. Sometimes the burns will be long, other times I crop them short. Right now I have some funky ass design growing on my face, but I bet in three or four weeks I’ll be bare faced. And seeing my father with just a mustache convinced me that I will continue to change my appearance for the rest of my life. I don’t want people to ever get too comfortable with just one appearance.

iPod Traveling

Posted by Jonah Weiland in General

Friday afternoon I was sitting in a crowded airport plugged in to my iPod. It was an interesting
exeprience. The crowded mass of voices is drowned out by the self-porgrammed radio station I’m listening to. Suddenly people start tapping their feet in time with the beats bouncing around inside my head. The people do a little dance in their seat that echoes the tone of the songs. The songs are the sountrack for evey person waiting for a flight.

Wait. Shit. Nope, I just fell in to a dream state with the iPod on again. Damn. That was a cool little world I was living in for a moment. Everyone was listeing to “Hey Big Brother” by Rare Earth with me and everything was more excellent.

Name Yer Bebe

Posted by Jonah Weiland in General

Good Buddy Augie De Blieck Jr. linked to the The Baby Name Wizard: NameVoyager over on his Web site and it’s truly fascinating. The site shows the relative popularity of names over a 100 year period. Take Jonah, for example. The name has grown in popularity exponentially since the 1960s. In the 1970s, when I received my name, it was barely being used, but today it’s becoming more and more popular. That actually jives with my own experience as I’ve met a number of children in the last three years with my name, yet for the previous thirty years I’ve only ever met two other Jonah’s.

How does your name rank?
