Transient Neighbors

Posted by Jonah Weiland in General

When I moved to my current home almost seven years ago in what is now referred to as the NoHo Arts Distric (aka South-North Hollywood or SoNoHo as I like to call it), I was the only one amongst my friends and colleagues who lived on this side of the valley. Most of my friends were on the west side of Los Angeles, Hollywood or the west side of the valley. I was even told by some friends I had “moved far away.” Whatever. But I really didn’t know this area at all well and didn’t know anyone else who lived all that near by.

Within my first year of living here, totally randomly four friends ended up moving within walking distance from my home, another moved into the apartment across the hall from me and I met two new people who also lived within walking distance. It was really kind of cool that in a three block area in Los Angeles I had a number of friends living near by, some I’ve known for almost twenty years.

That’s all coming to an end. This December the last of that group of seven will be moving about 30 minutes away. Over time they all settled in different places. One bought a home in Marina Del Rey and another bought one up in Canyon Country. Two people moved for jobs, one out in the Inland Empire and the other went to Manhattan. One moved back home to Colorado, having found LA not the place for her. And the final two are moving about 30 minutes away, once again for work.

You know, if I was self-obsessed slob, I’d think it was because of me. Thankfully I’m just a regular old slob.

So, does this mean it’s time for me to move? If not for the fact that I really like where I live, I’d take it as some sort of sign.

I’ve never been a big fan of signs, though. Especially Stop signs. Those bastards fuck everything up.
