Sleepus Interuptus

Posted by Jonah Weiland in General

Dammit. I really hate this.

My sleeping habits have always been a bit odd. I’ve always been a late night person, even since I was a kid. Hell, in elementary school I used to stay up to watch Johnny Carson routinely. It’s part of my genetic code at this point.

So, I generally go to bed later than most, say 2:30 in the morning or later. I like the late night hours where I can work in complete silence. No phone calls. It’s nice.

Tonight I got into bed at 2:15 and was asleep by 2:45. At 4:30 I was woken up by a phone call. One of my servers needed a reboot. No problem, takes just a few minutes to fix things. The problem lies in the fact that if I’m woken up soon after I fall asleep, there’s little to no chance of my getting back to sleep. I tried. I put my head down at 4:55, but by 5:30 it was clear I wasn’t going to get to sleep.

I learned a long time ago not to fight it. I could lie in bed for five hours before being able to get back to sleep, which just feels like a major waste. Generally, I have to just get out of bed, do something, and when I’m finally too tired to stay awake any longer, that’s when I get a couple of hours of sleep in.

I just really hate this, though. It’s going to screw up the rest of my day.
